Welcome to my corner of the Internet!

My name is Morgan Bakies and I’m pleased that you paid me a visit. I’m a junior in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, expected to graduate in May 2015. I grew up and went to high school in Perrysburg, Ohio.  For Spring 2013, I’m an exchange student at Swansea University in Swansea, Wales where I currently live.

At Illinois, I am involved with the Illini Biodiesel Initiative, first US chapter of Junior Enterprise, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, FIRST Lego League Robotics, Society of Women Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Catholic Illini community. These experiences have given me a variety opportunities including a research experience for undergraduates at the University of Alabama, poster presentation at the national AIChE conference, and an upcoming internship with LyondellBasell.

My heavy involvement with these different undergraduate activities and interactions with my peers showed me my true passion in October 2012. I am extremely interested in improving engineering education within higher institutions and I plan on pursuing this passion for the rest of my life in some form. The main focus of this blog is on commentary on engineering education with side thoughts on being a women in engineering and an engineer studying abroad.

I’m using this blog to pursue my passion. I’m an undergraduate with a voice. I want to learn, connect, and grow everyday. Thank you so much for helping me achieve my dreams!
